How betting news affects the crypto market
How news about rates is reflected in the crypto market
Central bank rate decisions move not only bonds and currencies, but also crypto. We connect macroeconomic events with the reaction of Bitcoin, Ethereum and liquidity in the market.
Why is betting even important for crypto?
The interest rate is the “price of money.” When it's high:
- risk-free yield (deposits, bonds) is growing, and risky assets look less attractive;
- borrowing cheap money for speculation is more expensive - there is less liquidity;
- the dollar is stronger, which often puts pressure on the crypt.
When the rate decreases or the market expects a decrease, the logic is the opposite: the appetite for risk grows, there is more liquidity, the crypt feels more confident.
Expectations are more important than facts
The market lays out the solution in advance. Therefore, the rule “buy the expectation, sell the fact” often works: by the time of publication, the price has already played out the forecast. What moves the market the most are surprises—when a decision or rhetoric diverges from expectations.
Key events on the calendar:
- meetings on the rate and the rate level itself;
- rhetoric (hawkish / dovish) at a press conference;
- data on inflation and the labor market - they form expectations before the meeting.
As seen in Bitcoin and Ethereum
- Bitcoin more often reacts as a “senior” risky asset - capital goes to soften the rhetoric, and goes to tighten it.
- Ethereum and altcoins usually move on a large scale: in risk-on they grow stronger, in risk-off they fall deeper.
- Liquidity - when news comes out, spreads and volatility widen; the first minutes often give false movements.
Practical conclusions
- Keep the dates of key macro decisions on your calendar and don’t be surprised by spikes in volatility around them.
- Distinguish the reaction to a surprise from the reaction to an already expected decision.
- At the time of news release, the spread and slippage are higher - take this into account in your risk.
- Look at the reaction of related markets (dollar, bond yields) - they help read the mood.
Macro sets the background, but does not replace the analysis of the chart itself. The best solutions are at the intersection of the macro context and the technical picture.
